Vista Alegre was established in 1824 by José Ferreira Pinto Basto, near Ílhavo, Aveiro – in the north of Portugal –, in the plot of land where the old Chapel of Vista Alegre is located. Only five years after the factory was built, Vista Alegre was granted the title of Royal Factory by King D. João VI, as a means of recognition for its craft and industrial success. Originally, the factory produced glass and ceramic objects; however, in 1880, it became exclusively dedicated to the manufacture of porcelain pieces. With the beginning of the resurgence period, Vista Alegre experienced a strong growth and renewal, demonstrating its capacity to adapt to any social and aesthetic change. The success of the brand was consolidated in the following decades of the 20th century and allowed Vista Alegre to assume a prominent position in the European market. Currently, Vista Alegre's products are officially employed not only by the President of the Portuguese Republic, but also by the White House, royal families and politicians from all over the world.
