New WAF Fellowship supports Women Artists in Portugal

The Women in Art Fellowship (WAF) is a new grant supporting female artists living in Portugal, offering funding, specialist mentoring and exhibition space for original projects in the fields of visual arts, sculpture, design, textiles and handicrafts, among others.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between VIA Outlet centres in Portugal – Freeport Lisbon Fashion Outlet and Vila do Conde Porto Fashion Outlet – Portugal Manual and State of the Art (SOTA). The programme is aimed at artists who have not yet received fellowships, gallery representation or sponsorship.

WAF offers an opportunity for artistic and professional development aimed at giving greater visibility to female voices in the creative scene. Candidates must be women aged over 18, living in Portugal for at least three years, and fluent in Portuguese.

The first edition has a special guest, the artist Joana Vasconcelos, who will sponsor the fellowship. Her work is internationally recognised for its feminist perspective and references to national identity and popular culture – values that also guide this initiative.
